What exactly is an Arum?

Arum are one of our few native UK Aroids which makes them special right away.

Arum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to Europe, northern Africa, and western and central Asia.

The bulk of species diversity in found in the Mediterranean region.

They are a type of Aroid which means they are in the Araceae family.

You will sometimes see the word Arum used to denote the entire Araceae family. An example is the bible for Aroid lovers ‘Aroids - Plants of the Arum family’ by Deni Brown.

Arum are often confused and identified incorrectly. The name arum is used in different ways in different countries. For example the Arum Lilly that we see in garden centers all over the world are actually Zantedeschia aetheopica and not an Arum at all.
